Nokia is releasing a $700 touch screen phone

Today, Nokia, the biggest maker of mobile phones in the world, introduced the N97, which is a new model of cell phone with a large touch screen. The company hopes this model boosts its revenues coming from smartphones.

However, according to some analysts, this new device won’t be enough to recover the market share Nokia has lost recently.

Nokia is still the world leader in the smartphone (phones with computer-like functions, for example e-mail) market, but it has lost a significant market share to its rivals: iPhone by Apple and Blackberry by RIM.

Investors and analysts are worried about this situation, because it would affect the profit margins of the Finnish company.

World directory of the XXI century is coming: .tel domain name registration is now possible

From today to February 2, Telnic, the registry operator for new “.tel” domains, is beginning to accept applications from trademark owners. At the moment, only trademark owners can apply for a domain in order to protect the intellectual rights of the companies. On March 24 registrations will be open to everyone.

According to Telnic’s chief executive Khashayar Mahdavi, “the launch of .tel represents the most significant innovation in the domain-name system (DNS) since the advent of .com. Essentially, the .tel offers businesses of all sizes a fast, efficient, adaptable and intelligent service that will let customers interact with them in any way they want.”

The new top-level domain extension will store all the contact information of a person or company in one online location (including phone, fax, postal address, e-mail…), so this information will be accessible from any device with an Internet connection.

The new .tel domains also represent a technical revolution. Thanks to the technological convergence, it is foreseen that each device can select the more efficient way to connect to the .tel domain. Besides that, .tel domains don’t need a hosting provider because the information will be stored directly in the DNS (Domain Name System) without the need to build, host or manage a Web site.

Apple iPhone 3G 16GB in Black or white

Product Summary

Good:

The Apple iPhone 3G offers critical new features including support for high-speed 3G networks, third-party applications, and expanded e-mail. Its call quality is improved and it continues to deliver an excellent music and video experience.

Bad:

The iPhone 3G continues to lack some basic features that are available on even the simplest cell phone. Also, we prefer the original iPhone's design.

The base line:

The iPhone 3G delivers on its promises by adding critical features and sharper performance. The iTunes App Store is pretty amazing, and the 3G support is more than welcome. We still have a few gripes, but the iPhone 3G is a big improvement over the original model.

Specs:

OS provided:

Microsoft Windows XP Home SP 2|Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP 2|Microsoft Windows Vista|Apple Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later; Band / mode: WCDMA (UMTS) / GSM 850/900/1800/1900; Wireless connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0

Editors' note:

Over the next few days we will be running full battery tests and thorough testing of the iPhone 3G's features. Once those are finished, we will post our final ratings. For more videos, photos, and news related to the iPhone 3G launch,

Just over a year after Apple birthed the first iPhone, the long-awaited, next-generation iPhone 3G has arrived bearing a mildly tweaked design and a load of new features. With access to a faster 3G wireless network, Microsoft Exchange server e-mail, and support for a staggering array of third-party software from the iPhone App Store, the new handset is the iPhone we've been waiting for. It still lacks some basic features but when compared with what the original model was year ago, this device sets a new benchmark for the cell phone world.

With the iPhone 3G, Apple appears to have fixed some call-quality performance issues we had with the older model in our initial tests, the volume is louder with less background buzz than before. Music and video quality were largely unchanged, but we didn't have many complaints in that department to begin with. We're worried about battery life--some early reviews indicate that the iPhone 3G lasts only a day--but we'll run full tests over the next couple of days and report our results on this page.

So should you buy an iPhone 3G? If you haven't bought an iPhone yet, and have been holding out for a new model, now is the time. If you're a current iPhone owner and you're yearning for a faster cellular network, then you should take the plunge. But if you're an iPhone owner who won't use 3G.then you should stick with your current model

Design

You'd be hard-pressed to notice any design differences on the front of the iPhone 3G. The minor changes--the silver rim is thinner and the silver mesh behind the speaker--are so minimal we didn't notice them for a few hours after picking up the device. Turn the phone on its side, however, and you'll see more changes. Apple has replaced the aluminum silver back with a plastic face in either white or black. The black version (our review model) is attractive, but we admit that we miss the original silver, which shows fewer fingerprints and smudges than the shiny black version. The white model is not our cup of tea.

GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr Pro reviewed

November 26th, 2008 by Marc in GPS gadgets, Photography

I’ve recently been considering how GPS devices can be applied to digital photography when you have a DSLR and shoot RAW files. There are a plethora of devices that will geotag your JPEGs but not so many that will handle RAW files off the shelf. Yes, you can roll your own solution but it would be nice if you could buy something that “just worked”.

The PhotoTrackr from GiSTEQ claims to have the answer - head on over to our sister site Coolest Reviews to see how I got on with it.

BlackBerry Storm's Shipping Delay: Blame the Firmware

Orders of the BlackBerry Storm online have been delayed, and according to some detective work from the Boy Genius Report, it's not due to intense demand. The Storm that BGR got to toy around with was loaded with the OS firmware 4.7.0.82, yet all the Storms being sold now are branded .65.

USB 3.0 Finally here?

November 17th, 2008 by Mark R in Tech News, USB Gadgets

At CES in January, we reported that USB 3.0 had been spotted in the wild. I have just recently learned that the latest version of our favorite compatible connector is on the way.

So what will USB 3.0 mean? Faster speeds, for one thing. Sources say it is 10 times faster. That means that downloading a document that takes 14 minutes to download will take only 70 seconds.

LED Heart-Shaped Pillow

Everyone can always make do with some gifts in their life, as it helps them feel wanted and loved. The LED Heart-Shaped Pillow says a whole lot, offering a comfortable place to lie on when you’re feeling low or simply just want to get comfortable on the couch. It works best when the lights are turned off, and I would recommend a mug of hot chocolate to go along with this $24 purchase to cap off a perfect winter evening with your loved one.

The MK V Shutter Watch

If you’re going to buy a watch anymore it has to be an unusual one that catches your eye to make it worth it. Let’s face it, it’s not really necessary to wear a watch anymore. We have plenty of other gadgets that have fifteen other functions, one of which being to tell the time. Well this MK V watch is definitely eye catching enough to make it an interesting piece to wear on your wrist. The down side is that you have to press a button to open the shutter that covers the watch face. Yet is that any worse really than tapping the screen of your iPhone to check the time?

Besides, with the way the shutter opens and closes it looks about like it’s created to be some super spy mechanism. The watch features a rubber strap and the case itself is made from brushed stainless steel. The steel part is available in three different colors. You can purchase it in black, slate or rose gold. The watch is a little pricey, it will cost you £109.99 or about $179 from Storm London.

Neck Traction Collar allows specific control of therapy to sides of neck

Both elegant, comfortable and portable, the neck traction collar is an effective home device that provides unprecedented control. I have used this device as an ALS Neck Support in a patient who enjoyed it while traveling in a car where it provided more stability to the neck than ordinary collars or neck supports.

The neck traction collar is operated by 2 hand held inflation bulbs. Each one inflates one side of the collar and the both combined create an upward pressure on the head and providing traction and relieving pressure from irritated nerves and sore muscles.

You have complete control of the level of inflation and can precisely control the amount of traction on either side of the neck. This provides an advantage over other types of inflatable traction and allows more traction to be applied to a specific side.

Place the collar around the neck, fasten two straps in the back and it's ready to use. By inflating one or both of the two bladders inside the collar using the hand pumps, a custom level of traction is achieved. Air can be controlled and released from the traction collar by simply pressing the release button on each pump.

No complicated setup instructions, metal attachments, hinges, pulleys, cords weights, messy water bags, blocking doorways or uncomfortable halters commonly seen with many home traction devices on the market. The Neck Traction Collar is easy to use, comfortable, safe and effective

Sweater with Temperature Display

Imagine pulling on a sweater only to wonder what the temperature is like around you? With the Sweater with Temperature Display, all your questions on what level the mercury stands at will be answered at a glance, regardless of whether you follow the metric system or not.

A snug, fleece sweater sports a radiant yet discreet temperature-display on each sleeve (one in Fº and one in Cº). Materials consist of fleece, sensor and a digital display.

There is no word on pricing (available on request), but it will take around 2 to 3 weeks to ship to your doorstep. With winter creeping up on us, getting this might not be such a bad idea after all.

New shoes can power gadgets

TOKYO (AFP) - Tired of your iPod running out of power? A Japanese company says it has found a way to charge portable gadgets just by walking.
Telecoms giant NTT is developing shoes that generate electricity as you walk.

The shoes have a small generator attached to water-filled soles. Each step puts pressure on the soles, causing the water to spin a small turbine and generate power.

The futuristic shoes currently generate 1.2 watts of electricity, "a level sufficient to run an iPod mobile music player forever, as long as the wearer keeps walking," said spokesman Hideomi Tenma.

"The company is trying to improve the power-generating capacity to three watts, which is the amount of electricity to power a mobile phone," he said.

"The shoes do not have a power-storage function, but you would be able to charge a mobile phone automatically or talk on it forever as long as you connect the phone to your shoes and just keep walking."

NTT hopes to put the generator into actual products as early as 2010.

2.5″ and 3.5″ SATA HDD Dock with Cooling Fan

We all know that hard drives tend to emit more heat when they are in operation compared to solid state drives, and more often than not computer devices are pretty averse to heat as it will reduce the overall lifespan. Brando aims to counter that with the 2.5″ and 3.5″ SATA HDD Dock with Cooling Fan, a USB-powered device that not only keeps your devices cool, but it also doubles up as a convenient data transfer, backup and cloning tool. The 8cm fan ought to be enough to keep whichever hard drive you insert running at optimal temperature, but you will probably struggle with the noise it emits after a while. The 2.5″ and 3.5″ SATA HDD Dock with Cooling Fan can be yours for $68.

R2-D2 Whizzwatch is another reason for an Artoo gadget

I don’t know what it is about this little astromech droid, but R2-D2 gets way too much publicity in the gadget world. At CES last January, I got a chance to see Nikko Electronics R2D2 Projector DVD player/projector, as well as the R2D2 Wireless Web Camera.

I suppose there is little point of telling about yet another R2D2 product, but I might as well report on the R2-D2 Whizzwatch. No, I did not misspell wristwatch, because this is a Whizzwatch!

Yes, it is a timepiece with a little model of everyone’s favorite non-protocol droid, and you can use the watch as a remote control to make Artoo wheel all around your desk. By the way, the Artoo unit is quite large, and putting it on your wrist is like wearing a shoe around your neck.

Mobilephone review : LG Secret KF750

Chocolate, Shine and Secret are not names you would normally associate with mobile phones. But thanks to LG, these monikers, together with the Prada and Viewty, have become just that. LG has undeniably done an excellent job here in creating an intangible brand attachment by replacing confounding numeric product names. Moving on, the Secret KF750 is the third iteration in the Korean chaebol's Black Label series. So what does it bring to the plate?
The good: Slim and trendy design; solid build quality; 3G with HSDPA; video-recording features; supports DivX up to VGA resolution; fun preloaded motion games.

The bad: Horrible control buttons; touch interface difficult to use; screen washes out in sunlight; glossy surfaces attract fingerprints; below-average performance for a non-smart phone.

The bottom line: It may be a stylish camera-phone with some entertainment features, but LG seriously needs to rethink the user interface of the handset, not just rely on pretty looks alone.

Nintendo Updates The Wiimote

Aside from a few broken windows and faces, the Wiimote destroys batteries, battery juice that is. Looks like they got smart, though, and have packed with Sanyo to integrate their ‘no one knows about’ Enloop battery technology. The battery pack fits on current Wiimotes and charges via the Wiimote stand.

For those note familiar with Enloop batteries: They’re like NiCd or NiMh rechargeables only they last longer, don’t have the same memory issues, and work right out of the box. I think they charge faster than standard rechargeables as well.

Available here for $74, but not officially in the US

Microsoft's device manners policy (DMP) patent seems very interesting, enforcing manners on people via automated wireless servers because they can't be bothered to be polite themselves. There are some examples inside the patent application, but the basic gist is that if you take a mobile device (cellphone, camera or laptop) into an area designated not-acceptable for that device to be used, it'll automatically be shut off or that particular feature will be locked. Imagine a no photography policy in museums turning off your phone, or no recording in movie theaters, or no calling in hospitals. Not a bad idea for the office either. [Unwired View]

The iPhone could be a truly great gaming platform. Huge, bright screen, a processor fast enough to throw around some 3D graphics, motion sensors and -- from a developers point of view -- a big installed user base. The only problem is the lack of buttons. A touchscreen keyboard might work OK for typing emails, but for games, where split-second timing is needed to avoid death, or even better, kill some ducks, you need some buttons.

The answer comes in the form of the iControl pad, a standard set of buttons and a D-pad mounted on a case into which the iPhone can slide, hooking up via the dock port. You won't get much from the blurry video below, but the developers have already sent out some test units and plan to have a release in July, priced at a reasonable $30.
If it works, it might boost the iPhone into the big games league, easily trouncing the PSP and N-Gage, although, unless somebody ports Mario Kart across, it'll have a hard time catching the DS. But, with those accelerometers inside, those people who play Streetfighter II by swinging the joypad all over the place might finally avoid ridicule.
